LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY SU BALL

Loughborough University Students Union aim high when it comes to their gala ball. Our brief is to propose brilliant themes and then deliver the dazzling décor to match. Continuously topping previous years' achievements is not easy but we welcome the challenge. Our roll of honour so far includes a James Bond theme, the Great Gatsby era, Las Vegas and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. For the James Bond theme we re-created the 'Skyfall' mansion complete with tunnels and an intricate array of props and décor. The 1920s Great Gadsby theme called for a four-day build and a grand staircase to a specially built first-floor level, overcoming innumerable health and safety challenges.

THE BRIEF:

Loughborough University Students Union aim high when it comes to their gala ball. Our brief is to propose brilliant themes and then deliver the dazzling décor to match. Continuously topping previous years’ achievements is not easy but we welcome the challenge. Our roll of honour so far includes a James Bond theme, the Great Gatsby era, Las Vegas and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

THE BUILD:

For the James Bond theme we re-created the ‘Skyfall’ mansion complete with tunnels and an intricate array of props and décor. The 1920s Great Gadsby theme called for a four-day build and a grand staircase to a specially built first-floor level, overcoming innumerable health and safety challenges.

The elite look was completed by fountains, plush swags of velvet, a classic car and a cavalcade of gangsters and characters.

Our gamble on a Las Vegas theme also paid off. This glittering look included a palatial fountain with a showgirl on top, a ‘Chapel of Love’ where a mad minister and organist ‘married’ guests. Performers included showgirls, stilt-walkers, an Elvis Presley tribute act and much more. Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School featured the magical Platform 9¾ entrance and a long dark smoky corridor into the main Hogwarts Hall with hundreds of hovering lit candles. Other iconic scenes included Hogwarts library and the sorcerers’ street called Diagon Ally.
