When one of the UK’s biggest attractions wants to take things to the next level, it turns to Area 51.
The latest edition of London’s world-famous Winter Wonderland marked a significant expansion in Area 51’s involvement with the Warwickshire-based creative production specialists entrusted with some of the event’s most ambitious and immersive visitor experiences to date.
Building on a long-standing relationship with the Hyde Park attraction, Area 51 was tasked with delivering not only its largest-ever Magical Ice Kingdom installation, but also the creation of two entirely new flagship attractions: a fully immersive Santa’s Workshop and Santa’s Grotto experience.
A RELATIONSHIUP BUILT ON TRUST
Winter Wonderland has attracted millions of visitors over the years and has become one of the capital’s most recognisable seasonal events.
Area 51 has played a key role in the attraction’s evolution, previously designing and constructing large-scale scenic elements including The Magical Ice Kingdom, Bar Ice, themed ski-lodge environments, giant snow-covered facades, custom sculptures, winter forests, illuminated signage and a host of other spectacular festive features.
The continued expansion of the firm’s involvement reflects the confidence organisers have in Area 51’s ability to deliver large-scale projects on time, on budget and to an exceptional standard.
BIGGER THAN EVER
The latest Magical Ice Kingdom proved to be the largest version of the attraction that Area 51 has ever delivered.
Visitors stepped into an extraordinary frozen world packed with intricate ice sculptures, snow effects, towering scenic elements, giant boulders, rockwork and film-quality set construction. Every detail was meticulously crafted to create a truly immersive experience that wowed guests from the moment they entered.
But impressive though the Ice Kingdom was, it was only part of the story.
SANTA’S WORKSHOP COMES TO LIFE
For the first time, Area 51 was commissioned to create an entirely new immersive walkthrough attraction centred around Santa’s Workshop.
Guests entered a magical festive world where they were greeted by Santa’s elves before embarking on an interactive journey through the workings of Christmas itself!
Children were given the opportunity to get involved hands-on with helping Santa’s indefatigable elf workers, including searching for special stamps for Santa’s mail, explore festive activities and discover a series of enchanting gift-making machines where presents appeared to move through the workshop on conveyors in a flurry of festive activity.
The attraction blended storytelling, scenic design, interactivity and theatrical magic to create an unforgettable experience for families.
A JOURNEY TO MEET FATHER CHRISTMAS
The workshop experience led visitors into a beautifully crafted outdoors winter landscape: a Lapland forest complete with authentic fir trees, snow, festive scenery and Santa’s famous sleigh, providing the perfect photo opportunity for all before families continued towards the main event.
Their journey culminated in a spectacular Santa’s Grotto, another entirely bespoke structure designed and built by Area 51.
Unlike previous projects where decorative facades were constructed around existing structures, both the workshop and grotto were fully freestanding attractions engineered and fabricated from the ground up.
The result was a seamless immersive experience that transported visitors right into the very heart of Christmas.
MONTHS IN THE MAKING
Projects on this scale don’t happen overnight and involve a lot of team work from a large number of people.
Work began almost a year before opening day, with concept development and design commencing in February. Following approval of the designs during the summer, fabrication began at Area 51’s Warwickshire hub, where specialist teams spent months constructing scenic elements, props, structures and interactive features.
Eventually, a crew of 38 then spent three weeks on site in Hyde Park, bringing the vision to life, carefully managing the build programme while navigating the logistical, engineering, weather and health-and-safety challenges associated with one of the UK’s largest temporary events.
CREATING THE FUTURE OF FESTIVE ATTRACTIONS
As plans move forward for the next edition of Winter Wonderland, Area 51 continues to push the boundaries of what is possible within immersive seasonal entertainment.
From giant scenic builds and interactive storytelling environments to world-class fabrication and technical delivery, the company remains at the forefront of creating magical experiences for audiences of all ages.
At Winter Wonderland, Area 51 isn’t just building attractions.
It is helping create memories for hundreds of thousands of visitors every year…
They really have become architects of Christmas.
