SCI-FI WEEKENDER: NORTH WALES

AREA 51 HELPS LAUNCH BRITAIN’S ULTIMATE SCI-FI CELEBRATION INTO ANOTHER GALAXY!

From towering aliens and Victorian steampunk adventurers to robots, dark elves, and creatures from distant galaxies, Area 51 spent a decade helping transform a part of North Wales into one of the UK’s greatest celebrations of all things sci-fi, fantasy and pop culture.

Working closely alongside the organisers of Sci-Fi Weekender, the Warwickshire company became an integral part of this much-loved annual convention from its earliest years at Hafan y Môr Holiday Resort at Pwllheli, helping create an immersive universe where thousands of fans could lose themselves for an unforgettable long weekend.

ENTERING ANOTHER DIMENSION…

Sci-Fi Weekender was never going to be just another fan convention.

Right from the very start, it was an interactive world where science fiction, fantasy, gaming, the worlds of comics, movies, television, cosplay and live performance collided to create an experience unlike anything else in Britain.

From celebrity Q&A sessions and movie screenings to hi-tech gaming tournaments, scenic props, live music and stunning cosplay competitions, every corner offered another adventure waiting to be discovered.

A GALACTIC INVASION OF ENTERTAINMENT

Over the years, Area 51 dispatched an extraordinary army of performers to the Lleyn Peninsula in North Wales, ensuring there was always something unexpected around each mystifying corner.

Towering stilt walkers wandered among the crowds alongside mysterious alien creatures, elegant fauns, dark elves, futuristic robots, circus sideshow stars, Victorian strongmen, steampunk dancers, fakirs, Tiki tribesmen and an ever-changing collection of bizarre walkabout characters to keep it all thoroughly weird.

Area 51’s much-loved Caravan of Lost Souls also made memorable appearances, bringing with it a unique blend of immersive theatre, circus and beautifully eccentric humour to delighted audiences.

Every year introduced fresh characters, new costumes and even more imaginative encounters, ensuring no two weekends ever felt quite the same.

STARS FROM EVERY CORNER OF THE GALAXY

Sci-Fi Weekender quickly became renowned for attracting an impressive constellation of guests from across the worlds of film, TV, comics and music.

Over those early years, visitors enjoyed memorable appearances from celebrated actors such as Brian Blessed, William Hope (Aliens), Ken Stott (The Hobbit), René Auberjonois (Star Trek:  Deep Space Nine, Batman Forever), Chris Barrie  (Red Dwarf), Nicholas Brendon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Garrett Wang (Star Trek: Voyager), Paul McGann (Dr Who), Daphne Ashbrook (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Ross Mullan (Game of Thrones), Miltos Yerolemou (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Eve Myles (Touchwood), Peter Davidson (Dr Who), Craig Charles (Red Dwarf) and many more.

Comic book legend Dez Skinn, acclaimed artist Simon Bisley, entertainer Pat Sharp, author Robert Rankin and the legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop all contributed to the convention’s wonderfully eclectic atmosphere.

The event even welcomed celebrated rock musicians like Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, progressive rock pioneers Focus, Caravan and the unforgettable Arthur Brown while fan favourites like Professor Elemental, Darth Elvis & The Imperials, Boogie Storm and LevelUp Leroy all ensured the beats and tunes were of the highest quality.

John Robertson’s amazing “Dark Room was a perennial favourite and the entertainment continued long after the sun fled beyond the horizon.

BIULDING IMMERSIVE WORLDS

Area 51’s contribution extended well beyond supplying performers and stunning scenic props.

The company worked very closely with the organisers to invent immersive environments and themed scenic installations that became key parts of the convention experience.

Highlights included The Imaginarium, a spectacular retro-futuristic steampunk stage complete with giant teleportation chambers, imaginative themed zones, interactive attractions and the memorable Strip Club – a comic book artists’ and writers’ area developed alongside comics legend Dez Skinn.

Every scenic element was designed to encourage exploration, interaction and plenty of memorable photo opportunities for the large number of visitors who attended.

MORE THAN COSPLAY

One of the defining features of the weekender was its extraordinary sense of community.

Cosplayers, families, film fans, gamers, comic enthusiasts and lifelong science-fiction devotees all became part of the spectacle.

Rather than merely attending to simple watch entertainment, guests found themselves immersed within it, interacting with stars and performers, posing alongside extraordinary characters and becoming part of an ever-evolving adventure.

It was precisely the kind of fully immersive event that Area 51 has specialised in creating for decades.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Across more than a decade at Pwllheli, Area 51 helped establish Sci-Fi Weekender as one of Britain’s most imaginative fan conventions.

Combining immersive performances, stunning scenic design, walkabout entertainment and creative production values with an unrivalled understanding of audience engagement, the company played a central role in shaping an event that attracted many thousands of visitors year after year.
