MIXBURY FETE

MIXBURY – WHERE TRADITION MEETS SPECTACLE

There are village fetes… and then there are fetes that grow wings.

Set within the storybook surroundings of the Oxfordshire countryside, the annual Mixbury Fete began life as a lovingly imagined vision – Nigel Harris’ ambition to host the ultimate quintessential English garden gathering in the grounds of her home at Mixbury Hall.

Tea on the lawn, laughter on the breeze, and the gentle hum of community celebration – the kind of timeless tradition you’d expect to find pressed between the pages of a well-thumbed novel.

But when Area 51 entered the frame, the fete didn’t just blossom – it burst into full technicolour bloom.

And what started as an intimate rural gathering has evolved, year by year, into something far more ambitious: a boutique festival experience woven seamlessly into the fabric of an English garden setting.

Classic charm meets creative spectacle. Heritage meets imagination. Cucumber sandwiches meet controlled explosions of artistry.
And yes – it still pours the tea properly!

FROM GARDEN PARTY TO FESTIVAL PLAYGROUND

The relationship between entrepreneur and philanthropist Nigel Harris and Area 51 stretches back to when he commissioned the first performance of the company’s Somnambu circus production – an early collaboration that planted the seed for something much larger. That seed has since grown into a multi-layered entertainment landscape where tradition and theatricality share the same space.

Today, visitors wander through a living, breathing canvas of performance and participation:
– Stilt walkers drifting above the crowd
– Magical walkabout characters mingling and improvising
– Acrobats and aerialists rewriting the laws of gravity
– Magicians bending perception
– Fire artists igniting twilight with sparks and spectacle.

Area 51 supplies dozens of performers, transforming pathways into processions and lawns into stages – ensuring no two moments unfold quite the same way.

THREADING THE NARRATIVE NEEDLE

Each year brings its own narrative heartbeat – a thematic storyline stitched through the event like bunting across a summer sky. Rather than a collection of separate attractions, the fetes comes an immersive environment where décor, performance and atmosphere interlock.

The company’s scenic installations and visual design elements expand the sense of wonder – layered décor, playful structures and imaginative environments that invite exploration and interaction. Add to this sideshows, hands-on experiences and interactive games – from archery challenges to curiosity-sparking amusements – alongside traditional fairground rides, and the result is a celebration that rewards both wandering and participation.

A CELEBRATION THAT SCALES

Perhaps the most telling magic trick of all is the fete’s evolution. What began as a personal passion project has grown into a recognised fixture on the British entertainment landscape – a date that draws visitors far beyond village boundaries while retaining the warmth and authenticity that inspired it in the first place.

Area 51’s contribution has to been amplify – not replace – the soul of the event held in deepest Oxfordshire, with Mixbury Hall’s grounds becoming a fertile garden of inventiveness that would have delighted the likes of C.S. Lewis, J.R. Tolkien and Terry Pratchett.

It’s all about enhancing rather than overshadowing. And, of course, it is a case of elevating instead of reinventing.

And Area 51 believe in turning charm into enchantment and scale into spectacle, rather than spoiling the original blueprint. Because sometimes the most powerful transformations don’t erase tradition – they give it a bigger stage.

MAKING MAGIC HAPPEN

At its heart, Mixbury Fete stands as a perfect example of what can happen when imagination is given space to roam: collaboration between vision and execution, hospitality and creativity, countryside elegance and festival energy.

Proof, if it was needed, that with the right blend of artistry, infrastructure and creative daring, even the most quintessential English garden fete can become something extraordinary.

Area 51 – quietly raising the bar, lifting the atmosphere and occasionally setting it on fire (professionally, of course!).
