Crack crews from Area 51 stormed a 17th century fortress in the Balkans to play their part in establishing EXIT as one of the world’s foremost music festivals for the past quarter of a century.
Acts that include dancers, aerial specialists, stilt walkers and a myriad of other performers jetted out to Serbia to take centre stage inside the Petrovaradin Fortress at Novi Sad in front of tens of thousands of fans.
Area 51 artists have performed there over a number of years as the festival developed a top reputation and accumulated a raft of award wins as it cemented its place among the elite of global music festivals.
EXIT began in 2000 as part of a student movement fighting for democracy and freedom in the Balkan region and expanded to organise four related events including the No Sleep Festival in Belgrade, Serbia, the Sea Star Festival in Umag, Croatia and the Ada Divine Awakening Festival in Ada Bojana, Montengro. The EXIT team also operated other festivals in Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria and Romania.
Among the innumerable acts to have Performed at EXIT are the likes of Paul Weller, the Pet Shop Boys, the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, Morrissey, Madness, Placebo, Kraftwerk, Guns ‘n’ Roses, The Killers, The Cure, The Prodigy, Black Eyed Peas, Grace Jones and The Sex Pistols.
Performers from Area 51 have primarily entertained crowds inside the Novi Sad fortress but have also made the overland dash towards the sunshine doused Adriatic coast to take part in one of EXIT’s sister events – Sea Dance on the beach in Montenergo.
