Some attractions make you jump. This one made people run for the lifeboats!
For a truly one-of-a-kind Halloween experience, Area 51 transformed the legendary TSS Duke of Lancaster steamship into a full-scale immersive horror attraction – proving once again that when it comes to bold, bespoke scare events, they’re in a league of their own.
A GHOST SHIP REAWAKENED
Permanently beached on the North Wales coastline at Mostyn, since 1979, the Duke of Lancaster is one of Wales’ most iconic ant atmospheric landmarks. Originally launched in 1956 as a luxurious British Railways passenger ferry and cruise ship, the vessel has long been a haunting sight on the coastline near Rhewl at the mouth of the River Dee and the Irish Sea, its rusting hull and ghostly silhouette making it the perfect location for a terrifying after-dark experience.
Along with her sister ships, the TSS Duke of Rothesay and the TSS Duke of Argyll, she was one of the final passenger-only steamers built for British Railways which, in the 50s, was also a ferry operator. Built as a replacement for the 1928 vessel, the Duke of Lancaster, the ship primarily sailed from Heysham in Lancashire to Belfast but also regularly steamed to the Scottish islands, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Spain.
As the popularity in car ferries grew during the mid-1960s, passenger ships like the Duke of Lancaster were losing their appeal and was partly converted in order to carry cars in 1970 for the following five years before switching routes to service Fishguard to Rosslare and Holyhead to Dún Laoghaire until 1978.
The ship was brought to its current location and used as a so-called “fun ship” for a number of years and was even commissioned to be turned into an open-air art gallery with celebrated European graffiti artists giving it a colourful look until 2017 when it was painted black.
FEAR AROUND EVERY CORNER
For this chilling production, Area 51 scripted and staged “Chapter 3: Shipwrecked Survivors” – an immersive scare maze that transformed the abandoned ship into a living nightmare. Guests were plunged into a world of fear and tension as they navigated dark corridors, claustrophobic passageways and sinister spaces packed with shocks around every corner.
To bring the experience to life, Area 51 deployed a squad of 30 actors, each fully costumed and directed to create a genuinely terrifying atmosphere on board. Every scream, every sudden appearance and every shadowy moment was meticulously choreographed to keep visitors on edge from the moment they stepped on board the vessel.
TRANSFORMING LOCATIONS INTO LIVING THEATRE
The production went far beyond actors alone. After leaping through hoops to get the event approved in the first place, the work going forward was extensive and handled with precision, verve and flair.
Area 51 also supplied extensive set dressing, props, scenic décor and atmospheric effects, using the company’s considerable experience in immersive storytelling to completely make over the already-eerie ship into something truly cinematic.
MASTERS OF IMMERSIVE HALLOWEEN ENTERTAINMENT
The result was a staggering event that drew huge praise from visitors, with many leaving the ship shaken, thrilled and absolutely convinced they’d experienced one of the most frightening Halloween attractions in the region.
Set aboard one of the UK’s most unusual venues, it was another spectacular example of Area 51’s ingenuity – taking an extraordinary location and elevating it into an unforgettable live horror experience.
When others see an abandoned ship, Area 51 see a stage for nightmares…
