BUILDING AN ICONIC FESTIVAL LANDMARK

Some festival projects are designed to blend into their surroundings. Others are just impossible to miss!

When Area 51 was commissioned to create the towering entrance feature for Glastonbury’s legendary Beat Hotel, the brief was clear: build something bold, unmistakable and worthy of one of the festival’s best-loved destinations. The result was a spectacular landmark that rose high above the crowds, becoming an instantly recognisable beacon for thousands of festival-goers making their way through the giant site.

ENGINEERING MEETS IMAGINATION

Creating a structure on this scale demanded far more than creative flair alone. The giant installation was meticulously designed and manufactured at Area 51’s Warwickshire headquarters before making the journey to Worthy Farm for installation.

The week-long build combined CNC machining, traditional carpentry, steel fabrication, LED integration, electronics, scenic painting and specialist finishing techniques. Every element was carefully distressed and aged by hand, giving the finished piece the authentic retro character that perfectly complemented the Beat Hotel’s distinctive aesthetic.

Behind its laid-back appearance lay an impressive feat of engineering.

A CHALLENGING BUILD ON SITE

Transporting a structure of this size to one of the world’s largest festivals was only half the challenge. Installation at Glastonbury required careful planning, experienced technicians and precise teamwork with Area 51’s production crew expertly assembling the landmark feature in the demanding conditions of a live festival build. The project demonstrated the company’s ability to deliver complex scenic installations reliably, safely and to exacting standards, even within the tight schedules that major festivals demand.

THE PERFECT GATEWAY

Positioned within Glastonbury’s bustling Market Area between the Pyramid Stage and what is now the Woodies area, the Beat Hotel became a natural meeting place throughout the festival. Celebrated for its eclectic music programming, vibrant atmosphere, exceptional food and extensive cocktail offering, it attracted visitors throughout the day and well into the early hours.

Area 51’s striking entrance feature captured that spirit perfectly, combining vintage psychedelic styling with modern fabrication techniques to create a landmark that felt both nostalgic and yet unmistakably contemporary.

BUILT TO BE REMEMBERED

The completed installation proved an immediate success with both organisers and festival audiences, drawing admiration not only for its scale but also the craftmanship behind every detail. It remains an excellent example of Area 51’s ability to combine scenic artistry, structural engineering and technical production to create installations that do far more than decorate a venue. They become part of the experience itself.

Whether designing immersive environments, fabricating large-scale scenic features or delivering technically demanding installations under festival conditions, Area 51 continues to create the memorable landmarks that help define some of the UK’s most celebrated live events.
