AREA 51 HORRORS UNLEASHED ON GWRYCH CASTLE

When the shadows fall at a Welsh gothic castle, even the bravest visitors might think twice before turning the next corner.

Perched dramatically above the North Wales coastline, Gwrych Castle is an enchanting ruin – famous to many as a filming location for “I’m A Celebrity – Get Me Out Of Here” during the pandemic years – and has become a setting for one of the region’s most atmospheric Halloween experiences. And Area 51 has been at the heart of the action, instrumental in helping it become a seasonal smash hit.

Working alongside the castle’s creative team, Area 51 helped bring an immersive Halloween castle tour to life, filling the shadowy halls and winding grounds with actors, walkabout performers and striking characters in spectacular costumes.

Around every corner lurked a trademark Area 51 surprise – eerie encounters, ghostly figures and theatrical moments designed to keep visitors on edge from the moment they stepped through the gates.

The Halloween attraction at the castle on the outskirts of Abergele, has grown into a major seasonal attraction. During the day and early evening, families can explore interactive monster trails, storytelling corners and creative activities throughout the castle grounds. But when darkness falls, the atmosphere shifts dramatically. The after-dark sessions become far more intense, with darker themes, immersive scare scenes and performers ready to startle even the boldest guests.

In its first year, the scare experience was a barnstorming success. The show featured a gathering of Gwrych ghosts, led by “Countess Winifred”, the lady-in-white, who came together to try and ruin the evil plans of other ghouls led by the evil lady-in-red.

Guests were warned they would witness a classic battle between good and evil and that they would need to be prepared to take sides.

Twelve months after that successful show, the company went all-in with a far more terrifying adventure called “The Awakening” where a corrupt holy order of ancient Knights Templar lived on as a powerful secret society within the castle walls, hell bent on destroying the world order.

The twisted tale of conspiracy and was nominated for the Best New Attraction and Best Make Up and Costume titles at the UK’s prestigious Scare Awards and once again underlined the credentials of the award-winning masters of horror and SFX experts, Area 51.

The company used the gothic architecture itself as stunning scenery and added brilliant extra installations, together with specialist lighting and breath-taking audio effects.

The castle’s surrounding grounds were transformed into a full Halloween festival environment, complete with live entertainment, street food, themed bars, fairground rides, an outdoor cinema and an illuminated light trail weaving through the castle’s dramatic landscape. Visitors could wander through glowing displays, encounter eerie characters and experience the castle in a way few historic locations can match.
