CIRQUE DU SPICEAL
Area 51 kicked off this ominous year with an apocalyptic showcase of twisted, urban circus madness, the Caravan of Lost Souls became "Cirque Du Spiceal" - in conjunction with Kerrang! Radio - was unleashed upon the unsuspecting as they shopped at the Birmingham's Bull Ring shopping centre.
Almost 40 of our crew hit the SFX Weekender in the Welsh coastal resort of Prestatyn to deliver a Sci-Fi feast of interstellar, mind melting fantasy weirdness!
BGT SEMI FINALISTS
In the meantime, the crew had secretly moved into the Britain's Got Talent auditions, we thought we'd keep it quiet until we actually progressed to a respectable round. Which we did! From 65,000 entrants the crew made it all the way to the semi-finals with an unprecedented SFX dance show featuring our famous Globots. Biggest praise was drawn from the Man himself - Simon Cowell.
UNIVERSITY HAS COMPLETE HOGWARTS TRANSFORMATION
Stunned students were in disbelief when the workshop stars of Area 51 wielded their magical powers to transform their university into a Harry Potter wonderland heaped full of Hogwarts surprises.
NO BEEF BETWEEN AREA 51 AND THE SCISSOR SISTERS
Just when the crew thought they were in for a quiet week, a last minute call was received from the Scissor Sisters, with a mad request to produce a pair of giant Beefeater dance characters that resulted in a mad 48 hour workshop flurry to make it in time for the gig at the Tower of London.
AREA 51 GET GOLD FOR OLYMPIC CHERRY DISPLAY
The Olympics had finally arrived in the UK, and Area 51 were called up to the team, but this hurdle was like no other. A Russian sporting giant requested half a dozen cherry trees complete with blossom to feature as part of a stunning display overlooking St. James Park throughout the London Olympics.
WHAT A CONK... AND DON'T WE JUST NOSE IT!
The London Dungeon had decided that Area 51 were the right crew to operate on the biggest nose job in history, standing 13 feet tall and placed on the Millennium Bridge, stunning both commuters and tourists during the summer months of last year.
EXIT STRATEGY A SUCCESS AS BRITAIN SOAKS
Area 51 then made a dash in a van across Europe in a bid to escape waterlogged England, and wound up on stage at one of Europe's major events, Exit Festival in Serbia. We made the ten day trip for the sixth consecutive year and it continues to rise as one of the leading experiences on the festival calendar!
No sign of sun and the rain famously poured turning streams into rivers during the summer of 2012. Fearing the worst, the Area 51 workshop team had been busy building an ark, with the possibility that a massive flood would sweep across the UK. The animals marched in two by two and they set sail for a tiny island just south of the English mainland for Bestival!
The Area 51 animal farm then marched on to the East coastline of Kent, ready for more heated festival animal antics for Ibiza's famous Zoo Project Festival. This time the crowds were encouraged to get into the mood by dressing up as animals themselves. The Zoo had a natural backdrop of flora and greenery, the perfect setting for the pride!
Meanwhile, made an offer Area 51 simply couldn't refuse. In return for a bag of money and some decent exposure, we would have send two Globots to appear beside her to promote her new track, 'Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)'. Now size does not matter to us, the best things actually come in small packages, but if you're referring to LED clad glowing robots, then it's how the saying goes. Go big or Go Home!
Back at Area 51 HQ, a test flight in the newly reverse-engineered flying saucer found the crew slipping through a gap in the space-time continuum into strangely familiar surroundings - even though the inhabitants of this other World spoke in an alien tongue... Just what was going on? Our crew had only found themselves as special guests on Germany's answer to the Britain's Got Talent!
Now the crew may not be a clan of Astro-Physicists, but they can put two and two together, so when we found that Olly Murs was flirting with one of our Globots during an X-factor after party, gossip spread like wild fire through the tabloids!
JONATHAN ROSS'S HALLOWEEN BASH
Over the spooky period we were involved in many a ghoulish event, taking our army of the dead to Halloween events up and down the country. The Mac Daddy of all Halloween parties was hosted by Jonathan Ross who summoned the Area 51 Galactico's to do his bidding! Every year the host pulls out the stops, having the crew this time transform his place into a haunted manor with a creepy cast of our most gruesome characters to roam the grounds.
DEVIN TOWNSEND'S RETINAL CIRCUS
Area 51 were honoured to be involved in Devin Townsend's, 'The Retinal Circus', which played out at North London's Camden Roundhouse to 5,000 die hard Devin fans, each of whom had waited a year to see the show. The show merged the back catalogue of Dev's music, a crazy story with a planet smasher alien named Ziltoid, a parallel universe and Area 51's awesome circus. It was the most out-there, manic display of randomness from the next dimension ever witnessed on a stage.
Into November and the crew were heading for the entertainment capital of the world for a month of ballistic weekenders. Skegvegas baby! First up is the Naughty Weekender followed by the Big Reunion. They stand as the UK's biggest indoor festivals and provide one hell of a party, with around 18,000 hitting the Butlin's reosrt over the course of three weeks.
HARD ROCK HELL
The fun doesn't stop, the crew dig deep and a special select of our wildest, hardest hitting performers make the excursion to Wales, joining the metal heads for a long weekend of hard rocking, hard drinking, hard everything!
TRANSFORMERS - ROBOT'S IN DUBAI
While the HRH team were finishing themselves off with yet another wrong weekender, we had a late enquiry from Dubai requesting for the super Transformers to appear in their National Day show entitled, 'The Spirit of the Union.'
The penultimate show of 2012, Zippos Cirque Berserk was this years offering to the crowds at Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland. The famous Circus's collaboration with Area 51 has become a justified must see event on the London calendar.
IN THE ROUND AT THE RICOH
It was the final circus show of the year and came with specific criteria. This unique show was to be performed on a 360? 'in the round' stage along with other bits of entertainment that would feature throughout the night.
NEW YEARS EVE!
It all came to an extravagant end for the crew as teams of performers stormed Propaganda events up and down the country. However one lucky group was sent to the Maldives on a remote island, showcasing some more circus skills for some very exclusive guests.
All in all a smashing year with plenty to look forward to for 2013...Watch this space!
